Description

This Japanese-style wrestling dates from ancient times and is thus full of rituals. Six tournaments are held each year; Tokyo hosts three tournaments annually.

Leave Hamamatsucho Bus Terminal for the Ryogoku Kokugikan (Sumo Hall) by train. Upon arrival, enjoy exciting sumo matches from a reserved seat on the second floor. English commentary is available on radios which will be provided by the guide.

Tour ends at Ryogoku Kokugikan around 18:00. You may return to your hotels or onto your next destination on your own.

    The tour will go to Ryogoku Station from Tochomae Station by train.

    The whole area around Ryogoku Station is filled with the excitement of the Grand Sumo Tournament. There are also many chanko stew restaurants run by former sumo wrestlers in this area.

  • Sumo Tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan (180 minutes)

    You will watch the sumo matches from 2nd-floor reserved seats, after visiting the Sumo Museum. Enjoy the thrilling matches and rituals being held before your eyes. A sumo brochure and English sumo ranking list are also provided.

  • Makuuchi Wrestler Ceremonial Entrance

    The atmosphere in the arena brightens instantly as senior division wrestlers wearing vivid 'kesho-mawashi' ceremonial aprons enter the ring and form a circle.

  • Yokozuna Grand Champion Ring Entrance

    The yokozuna enters the ring accompanied by two apprentices.

  • Top Ranking Wrester Bouts

    Feel the excitement rise as the intense bouts between the highest division wrestlers begin.

  • Other Things to Do

    Check out the arena entrance lobby, where championship flags and prizes are on display.
    Visit the Sumo Museum with woodblock prints, folding screens and ceremonial aprons from as far back as the Edo period.

  • Spectators can go for a rest or grab a bite to eat at one of the arena vendors, even if a sumo match is underway.
