In 2012, CityDiscovery launched the the Win a Dream Week in New York contest giveaway. The contest received more than 12,000 entries between March 13 to June 30 from all over the world with the winner drawn last July 3, 2012. The lucky New York dreamer is Christina Elia of Launceston, UK.
"I applied thinking that nobody ever wins these things but I did have an excellent trip over the Atlas mountains in Morocco with City Discovery so why not just do it." Christina shared, "I have been to New York before, but on a very limited budget. The weather wasn't good and the hotel was very basic. I remember thinking at the time it would be nice to come again and do this properly."
And what better way to do it than to win a Dream Week prize package consisting of 5 nights at a centrally located hotel, a CityPASS New York ticket, a Big Apple helicopter ride and a double-decker bus tour good for 48 hours, private roundtrip airport transfers and 2,000 USD flight and pocket money?
Christina flew to New York in November during the Thanksgiving festivities and a few days after Hurricane Sandy hit the city. Her objectives on her second New York trip: to do some shopping, experience a variety of food outlets, visit museums like the Native American museum and timeless attractions like Central Park and Staten Island Ferry. She sent in this story with some pictures:
"My son and I had a wonderful time in New York. The flight there went like clockwork which is just as well as it is a long journey. When we got to JFK we found the limo eventually and the fact that it was my first time in a stretch limo compensated for the fact it wasn't waiting when we got there."
"The hotel was very nice, we had a twin room which was clean and warm. It was handy for walking to Times Square and the shops.
The day after we arrived was Thanksgiving so we saw the parade, very exciting and so many people. The next day was Black Friday so again the city was packed. We visited Macy's and some other stores and my son picked up some bargains for his girlfriend. On Saturday, we had our helicopter ride, another first for me. It gave us some wonderful views over the city and I quite forgot my fear of heights."
"On Sunday we took our complimentary harbour cruise and circled the Statue of Liberty. We could see the damage caused to Liberty Island pier by Hurricane Sandy. In the afternoon, we went up the Empire State building."
"We also managed to fit in a museum visit, and some excellent meals."
In closing, Christina wrote, "Thank you very much for a wonderful experience. By the way it was very cold, we even had a few flakes of snow." November snow in New York! How's that for an ending?
