An ambitious project began in the early 1900s: transform an abandoned quarry into a garden of exotic plants and flowers from around the world. Today, the quarry has been transformed into the Sunken Garden that together with the formal Rose Garden and Japanese Garden harbors over 5,000 varieties of flowers. Every year, the nurseries test around 35,000 new bulbs and 100 new roses. And every Saturday night, the gardens are brilliantly illuminated with firework displays.
