About Varanasi

With a history of inhabitation that extends to Iron Age India in the 11th or 12th century BC, Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Located on Ganges river banks in Uttar Pradesh state in India, this very historical city is variably known as Benares and Kashi, or “City of Life.” Throughout its history it has been an important industrial center, and grew to become one in culture and religion as well, with the Buddha having been said to have founded Buddhism here. Explore this ancient city, with all its temples and rituals and historical significance, through booking our 2015 tours and activities.

Take a Varanasi City Tour and explore some of the tens of thousands of holy temples in the city. Drive by the Benaras Hindu University and visit the Bharat Mata, or Mother India Temple. Also see the Durga Temple, which is alternatively known as the “monkey temple” due to its population of monkeys, and the Temple of Vishwanath.

Go on a Half Day Excursion to Sarnath and explore the place where Buddha gave his first sermon in 528 BC, giving rise to the philosophy. A local museum, one of the most important in the whole country, contains carvings from different time periods throughout the history of India, including selections from the archaic, Mathura School, Medieval, Gupta, and more, ranging from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD.

End any day in Varanasi with an evening tour, on which you’ll follow the Ganges River’s path. Walk through city streets and alleys to Dal Mandi, a very popular wholesale market of garments and other items. Go on to the kite market, where a kaleidoscope of colorful paper kits of different shapes and sizes awaits your perusal. See Chowk and Vishwanath Gali, one of the largest silk markets in the city. Proceed to Dasawamedha Ghat, where the Aarti, an amazingly beautiful Hindu ritual, awaits. Close this remarkable tour with dinner at a rooftop restaurant, where a view of the city and the Ganges serve as the backdrop to your meal.
