Although it practically ceased to be Warsaw’s center by the end of the 18th century, this market square remains the heart of the Old Town. Rebuilt after World War II, it was the favored location for affluent families; its houses retained a largely period feel. It also houses the Historical Museum of Warsaw and a number of other museums and galleries.Locally, the square is known as Rynek Starego Miasta.
